Hammerspace CEO to Spotlight Metadata at Feb. 27 Smart Hollywood Summit

Among the highlights of the Feb. 27 Smart Hollywood Summit — a day-long conference looking at the transformative effect AI, blockchain, metadata, OTT and automated processes are having on Hollywood content — are a series of technology showcases, with industry experts sharing innovative ideas, processes and perspectives.

The program will see David Flynn, co-founder and CEO of data-as-a-service firm Hammerspace, offer his thoughts on how extensible metadata is changing every aspect of the media workflow, by reshaping the structure and organization of how people manage data, in the presentation “Metadata Title Goes Here.”

“Extensible, programmable metadata makes it trivial to embed business logic and policy,” Flynn said. “While automated data presentation and management can be used for the exchange, analysis and presentation of data, only an extensible namespace allows for the control and automation of data management.”

Flynn’s presentation will look at how rich metadata allows artists to apply the creative process to solving problems, rather than adhering to storage IT concepts, and how AI-generated metadata harvested from data can make content contextual and tactile, while also automating the management of data across the infrastructure. But to achieve that level of data agility, companies must separate the management of metadata from data, something storage systems will never do. Expansive metadata control is needed so people can process it, without having to follow the limitations dictated by machines.

“In this presentation we talk about using a spreadsheet-like approach for building abstract concepts in metadata from other pieces of metadata — making this complex task straightforward to where it becomes like putting formulas into the cells of a spreadsheet,” Flynn said.

This year’s Smart Hollywood Summit is being produced by MESA’s Smart Content Council with sponsorship by IBM Watson, MarkLogic, EIDR, Hammerspace, human-I-T, Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), KlarisIP, Testronic, FilmTrack, Mediamorph, RSG Media, Vistex, Vubiquity and Bob Gold & Associates.
