The Current and Future State of Digital Screeners

The Media & Entertainment industry continues to investigate online solutions that allow content to be reviewed in either the pre-theatrical release window or as part of their distribution workflow & sales process. Some of the use cases include publicity & promotional purposes, awards & sales screeners and for international ratings/censorship purposes.

In this past awards season virtually every studio, mini-major and independent sent out physical DVDs, which included a combination of watermarked, non-watermarked, visible burn-ins, anti-rip protection, or nothing at all. These screeners were sent out by UPS, Fed-Ex, or even regular US Mail. Distribution of these DVD screeners are further complicated as every studio has their own individual mailing lists, which may or may not be accurate.

The move to digital screener solutions is gaining traction as the advantages to transforming this essential element of distribution focuses more on security. It has also proven difficult to view legitimate screeners securely in a high quality environment that is integrated into the recipient’s usual viewing environment. Some security considerations for digital screeners include a very stringent on-boarding process, enforcement of unique usernames and complex passwords, two-factor authentication, accepting of piracy terms and conditions, blocking of concurrent log-ins, maximum view counts, session-based dynamic watermarking (both visible and invisible forensic), encryption, access control, DRM, and removal of content after the pre-determined availability window.

Join us on March 22nd from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Line Hotel in Los Angeles for CDSA’s Content Protection Briefing where we will showcase and discuss a number of existing or in-development solutions for screeners, as well as the studio perspective from security executives in the Media & Entertainment industry.

Securing Digital Screeners for OTT Delivery
DVDs are no longer meeting the needs for secure screening of high-value content. The industry has been moving toward Digital Screener systems that can stream HD video to a variety of portable devices. Forensic watermarking plays a major role in protecting the content and tracking it in case of a leak, and Civolution’s NexGuard products have been deployed in Digital Screener systems for 5 years.
