  • Understanding of the areas in the business where metadata makes an impact
  • How organizations are approaching this problem -> media best practicesHere are two potential topics:

Metadata drives the digital store shelf

The growth of distribution channels and opportunities to promote and connect content with users is driving ever more complexity in the digital supply chain. New approaches to how metadata is managed and changes in how metadata is delivered are changing digital distribution.

In this session we’ll discuss the problems facing distribution in three parts:

  • Internal Supply Chain – challenges around gathering the internal data.
  • Distribution data – mapping internal data to external partners has many challenges starting with genres.
  • Distribution methods – from shipping files to new API access getting data to partners is changing and we’ll discuss that.

Bonus discussion: practical approaches to standards for delivery – both local and international.  [Could be a very big topic – maybe the goal would be to use this session to document the major areas any standard would have to cover].
The takeaway from this session would be areas in the business where metadata makes an impact and best practices for managing metadata in the new and evolving media environment.

The impact of metadata on usage data and the value of assets

As media companies start to use asset usage data, metadata plays a critical role in helping the organization understand
the value of their content and the activity in the market.

This session will jointly develop the key factors including:
Metadata Workshop sponsors

  • The data needed to drive the understanding of the value of the assets
  • Linking it together – what it takes to get to the value of the asset

The takeaway from this session will be a guide to the critical success factors to helping your organization get the most value of their assets.

Introduction & Outline of Workshop Approach
Jim Bottoms, Executive Director, MESA Europe

The growth of distribution channels and opportunities to promote and connect content with users is driving ever more complexity in the digital supply chain. New approaches to how metadata is both managed and delivered are changing the world of content distribution.

This will be the area of focus for this afternoon’s workshop. Tables, consisting of up to 10 industry participants, across a range of different interest groups, will be invited to discuss their views on getting the most out of Metadata and routes maximising its business and financial impact.

The round table discussion will be divided into three separate sessions, with the outputs from each building towards, as a  takeaway, a practical guide to the new world of metadata. The discussion will focus on building a shared understanding of the areas where metadata makes a business impact and will consider best practice on how organisations are approaching this.

The three separate round table discussions are set out in more detail below.

Opening Keynote:  The Value of Metadata
David Sugg, Executive Director, Digital Media Systems, Warner Bros Entertainment

Round-Table Working Group 1: Handling and Processing Internal Metadata
In this opening round-table discussion we focus on the challenges of gathering and cataloguing internal data.

What are these challenges? How are any problems being dealt with? What lessons have been learned, and,
what is the perceived impact on the business?   What is considered to be best practice?

Collection of Results and Open Floor Discussion

Round Table Working Group 2:  Managing Metadata Distribution
Mapping internal data to external partners and ensuring efficient distribution of the data in a changing environment are key areas for an efficient operation.

What are the main challenges being faced in the area of metadata distribution and what solutions have been implemented to assist with this? Is there a key difference between local and international delivery? What would need to form the basis for metadata distribution standards and what would be the commercial impact of such standards?

Collection of Results and Open Floor Discussion

Metadata in Action: Tales from The New World of Delivery
Matt Turner, Chief Technology Officer of Media & Entertainment, MarkLogic

Round Table Working Group 3:  Asset Usage Data -Realising the True Asset Value
Improved Metadata assists content owners and distributors to better understand content usage and therefore the value of the asset

What data is available to assist with this and what additional data may be required? How important is this and what impact does it have from a business perspective? How can this best be communicated internally?

Collection of Results and Open Floor Discussion
