Mazin Al-Jumaili, Managing Director, BTI Studios UK

The shift from physical media to digital distribution, the reducing releases windows and the expansion in delivery platforms are all combining to have a significant impact on the business of Content Localisation. In this opening session of the afternoon our speaker draws on his extensive experience in this sector to set the scene for this afternoon’s workshop by highlighting the issues being faced in this rapidly changing business sector.

Open Floor Discussion to set Workshop Objectives & Review Priorities

Round Table Working Group 1:   Asset Management and Archive Solutions
Tables, consisting of up to 10 industry participants, across a range of different interest groups, will be invited to discuss areas where they face challenges in their business role with localisation of content.

Locating and retrieving assets is difficult enough locally. The problem is magnified when titles are localized and distributed internationally. This first open discussion of the afternoon will focus on some of the frequent issues people face, but more important, the lessons that have been learned and the systems and solutions that have been put in place or could be considered to assist with managing assets, particularly when archiving.

Security is an essential component in localisation workflows, in order to protect content from system hacks and ensure only trusted users can access content, especially when titles are being widely distributed and shared during the localisation process. In this next presentation we learn about a solution designed and adopted by NBCU Universal for complex studio workflows, and receive an update on how it is currently being employed by vendors on high profile episodic TV and movie content.

Round Table Working Group 2:   Managing File Formats
The second working group session will focus on all aspects relating to the management of file formats including the factors that sit behind the decision making when it comes to reuse, reformatting and updating.  Once again the emphasis will be on sharing experience and looking at perceived best practice. In addition, programme owners, would like to see some  form of rationalization in the number of file formats.  Is this realistic and, if so,what can be done to achieve this goal.

Advances in technology are helping broadcasters and content owners to more  effectively co-ordinate and manage their localisation needs.  Our next presenter will talk us through a number of case study examples including the extreme case of Top Gear, where the BBC has moved to a higher level of automation in order to stay one step ahead of the pirates.

Round Table Working Group 3:   Translation and Subtitling
There are many different approaches to producing and delivering a localized translation of the dialogue and commentary. In the final  working group discussion of the day participants will be encouraged to share ideas and experiences on the different approaches, and explore the decision making process in describing which approach to take.
