Fighting Illegal Sports Streams a Content Protection Summit Highlight

The July 24 Media & Entertainment Day at the Microsoft Conference Center in New York will include the Content Protection Summit East program, featuring media and entertainment experts offering insights into content protection, privacy and cybersecurity.

Along with presentations on the new industrywide Trusted Partner Network and a Microsoft deep dive into securing entertainment production in the cloud, Harrie Tholen, managing director of NexGuard, will offer up a unique presentation — “Real-World Tactics to Fight Illegal Sports Streaming” — one especially relevant considering the rampant streaming piracy of the recent World Cup.

Pay TV operators pay huge license fees to secure broadcast rights for premium live sporting events, to drive subscriptions. But live streaming piracy continues to grow, threatening the current business model, and the current whack-a-mole efforts to stem streaming piracy don’t seem to be working.

“Using a real-world use case from the current World Cup soccer, we will talk about tools that help to fight illegal streaming of live sports,” Tholen said. “The presentation will show sports rights holders and service providers that there is a growing problem, but also that solutions are available.”

He’ll share how a combination of anti-piracy monitoring and real-time watermark detection can disrupt pirate activity and stop piracy at the source.

The 2018 Media & Entertainment Day is presented by Microsoft, with sponsorship from IBM Watson Media, Amazon Web Services, IBM, LiveTiles, Microsoft Azure, NAGRA, NeuLion, Ooyala, EIDR, GrayMeta, MarkLogic, Qumulo, Avid, Cloudian and SoftServe. The event is produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA), the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA), the Hollywood IT Society (HITS) and the Smart Content Council.
