The Honorable Jeff Gorell serves as the City of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for Homeland Security and Public Safety. Jeff has prior experience as a state legislator, criminal prosecutor, university professor, and military intelligence officer.

As Deputy Mayor for Homeland Security and Public Safety, Jeff advises the Mayor of Los Angeles on policy related to policing, fire safety, security, cyber and resilience. He supervises a staff of 65 in the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety, and oversees departments and programs that total more than 30,000 city employees, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department. The Mayor’s Office of Public Safety also houses and directs the LA’s Gang Reduction Youth Development (GRYD) program; the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team (CRT); LA Cyber Lab; the Mayor’s Office of Resilience; and three federally-funded homeland security and counter-terrorism operational programs. As Deputy Mayor, Mr. Gorell sits on the Executive Steering Council of the U.S. DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), Sits on the board of directors for LA Cyber Lab; and serves as chief administrator of the Los Angeles/Long Beach Urban Area Security Initiative. He and his senior staff coordinate with other regional, state, and federal agencies to ensure Los Angeles is secure and fully prepared for any public safety emergency or natural disaster.

From 2010 to 2014, Jeff was an elected member of the California State Assembly, representing the 37th and 44th Districts. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee. Previously, he was a Deputy District Attorney in Ventura County, working in the Major Narcotics and Serious and Violent Felony Units. He is also currently an active-drilling Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and has been deployed twice to Afghanistan where he was decorated for leadership in a combat zone. He is currently Commanding Officer of a Pacific Fleet intelligence unit in San Diego with more than 75 officers and enlisted personnel.

Jeff earned his B.A. in history from the University of California, Davis and his J.D. from University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law. He lives in Camarillo, CA, and has two young sons, Jack and Steven.
