Rebecca MacKinnon directs the Ranking Digital Rights project at New America, evaluating internet, mobile, and telecommunications companies on their respect for users’ privacy, security, and expression. Co-founder of the citizen media network Global Voices and author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle For Internet Freedom, she is on the Board of Directors of the Committee to Protect Journalists and was a founding board member of the Global Network Initiative. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, MacKinnon was CNN’s Bureau Chief and correspondent in China and Japan between 1998-2004.  She has taught online journalism at the University of Hong Kong held fellowships at Harvard’s Shorenstein and Berkman Centers, the Open Society Foundations, and Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy.
