AWS Machine Learning, Analytics Tapped by Bundesliga

German soccer league Bundesliga is now looking to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its machine learning and analytics, to both improve personalized fan experiences and deliver new game and player statistics.

Bundesliga will use AWS artificial intelligence, compute, database and storage services as well, all to deliver real-time statistics, predict future plays and game outcomes, and recommend personalized match footage across all devices and platforms.

Using AWS technology, Bundesliga will also build new cloud-based services that automate processes and enhance the viewing experience for the league’s global fan base. Amazon SageMaker — a managed service to build, train, and deploy ML models — Bundesliga will offer real-time predictions on when a goal could be scored, and highlight how teams are controlling the field, based on live data streams and historical data from more than 10,000 previous games.

“As the league with the highest average number of goals per game, and the highest stadium attendance globally, the Bundesliga is one of the most entertaining sports leagues in the world,” said Andy Isherwood, VP and managing director EMEA, for AWS. “We are thrilled to work with the Bundesliga and help them use cloud technology to give football fans around the world a more engaging match day experience and look forward to helping them leverage our deep portfolio of ML and AI services so they can deliver even greater insight into the world’s favorite game.”

Bundesliga will also use AWS ML service Amazon Personalize to offer fans personalized game footage, promotions, and search results; and AWS ML service Amazon Rekognition to build a cloud-based media archive that will automatically tag specific frames with metadata so the league can easily search historical footage for in-game broadcasts.

“We are extremely excited to be working alongside AWS to develop the next generation of football viewing experience,” said Christian Seifert, CEO of Bundesliga. “Innovation means challenging the status quo. Working closely with AWS, as one of the most innovative technology companies in the world, significantly enhances the investment we’ve made in innovation over the past two decades, all of which contributes to us being able to deliver a world-class football experience for our fans.”
