Expert System Adds MovieLabs Creative Works Ontology to AI Platform

Artificial intelligence firm Expert System has a new feature to its Cogito AI platform, one powered by the Creative Works Ontology developed by MovieLabs, the nonprofit research and development venture run by major Hollywood studios.

The new service will help media companies apply MovieLabs’ ontology to assets and develop interoperable data systems.

Published in late 2018, the Creative Works Ontology provides media firms well-defined classes of entities (Creative Work, Contributor, Character, etc.), along with unique identifiers, properties and relationships, and acts as a standard organizing framework to describe relationships between works and other entities, providing a scalable metadata foundation for applications.

The ontology is geared toward allowing content producers, distribution platforms and service providers interoperability of asset metadata and the ability to integrate data coming from disparate systems. Paired with Expert System’s Cogito platform, the new module allows media companies to simplify the application of the MovieLabs organizing framework via automation.

“The combination of Expert System’s Cogito AI platform with MovieLabs’ Creative Works Ontology opens the door to automated, standardized indexing of media knowledge and data,” said Daniel Mayer, SVP of products for Expert System Enterprise. “We look forward to building game-changing search, navigation and recommendation engines with our media customers, and bringing their analytics to the next level.”

Raymond Drewry, principal scientist with MovieLabs, added: “A key goal of the Creative Works Ontology was to provide a framework for content producers and service providers to help build interoperability into their core data structures. By integrating the ontology into their AI product, Expert System is providing an important new tool for advancing that goal.”
