HITS Fall: Ooyala’s Sakata Stresses Importance of Supply Chain Metadata (HITS)

Glen Sakata knows metadata — and making sure it’s done right — can be intimidating to some. But it doesn’t have to be. “When you look at it from the end-to-end perspective, it becomes that much more difficult,” the product evangelist for Ooyala said Oct. 4, speaking during a morning presentation during the Hollywood Innovation & Technology Summit (HITS) Fall event. Indeed, looking at everything involved with metadata during the lifecycle of content— from conception to production to post to distribution to consumption — the sheer volume of metadata needs along the way can seem daunting.

“From start to finish, wherever you are in the food chain, you have your own layer of metadata that needs to be organized, maintained and utilized,” Sakata said. “From start to finish it needs to be managed intelligently.”

Doing that means looking at metadata differently: it’s no longer simply information about a video asset and physical media, he said. And it’s not just what’s known as extended metadata, which offers improved search and version control of projects and assets. Intelligent metadata drives workflows, packaging and exception handling, and smarter metadata enables automation, analytics, and decision making.

It adds granularity for accelerated enrichment from machine learning and artificial intelligence, Sakata said.

That’s what’s different about the tools utilized today to collect and make use of metadata, he added. They involve improved processes at the beginning of content creation, and directly elevate consumer experiences and profits at the end. Smarter metadata use and united processes can make content production and distribution, live streaming, and digital video playout systems alike all the more efficient, resulting in greater ROI.
