Luxoft, LG Electronics Partner to Bring webOS to New Verticals

IT services provider Lufoxt has announced a new partnership with LG Electronics, to bring LG’s webOS operating system to new verticals outside of smart TVs and set-tops, including robotics, automotive and smart home devices.

Currently, LG has webOS deployed in more than 60 million smart TVs and digital signage displays worldwide. Bringing Lufoft on board as a strategic partner adds a new technical layer, the companies said, considering the company’s history of designing and deploying software platforms for other products and services. Luxoft will lead the deployment of webOS into the new sectors, starting with automotive, focusing on digital cockpit development, which covers infotainment, navigation, and other features.

“Thanks to our collaboration with Luxoft, we are able to bring webOS into automotive and beyond,” said I.P. Park, CTO for LG Electronics. “Luxoft is providing a substantial technological contribution to webOS and has also greatly enhanced our ability to deploy it into new industries.”

Mikael Söderberg, senior technical director of automotive for Luxoft, added: “We’re already leveraging LG Electronics’ thriving smart TV eco-system to customize and enhance webOS so it provides an innovation canvas for car manufacturers to develop next-generation autonomous vehicles. Having access to webOS and its cloud services platform will enable car makers to design and develop better customer experiences for autonomous mobility services.”

Dmitry Loschinin, president and CEO of Luxoft, said the partnership will “help accelerate the mobility revolution, improve human-robotic interactions and make smart devices even smarter.”

“Underlying this partnership is a shared desire to make it easier for manufacturers to innovate with technology. This platform gives them the flexibility to make digital changes,” he said.
