NAB Show: Cyber Summit Keynote Looks at Protecting Journalists in the Field

Being a reporter in the field can often be a dangerous job, and in recent years they’ve faced new concerns: cyber threats. That will be the topic tackled in a keynote conversation April 8 at the Cyber Security & Content Protection Summit, during the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

“Journalists around the world have never faced more threats than they do today. In many countries cyber threats add an extra layer and dimension to the physical security issues we have always faced,” said Rebecca MacKinnon, director of the Ranking Digital Rights project, senior research fellow for the New America Foundation and board member with the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Her keynote — “Protecting Journalists in the Field” — will provide cybersecurity stories from journalists in the field and offer up tips about how to protect broadcast editorial team wherever they’re working.

“In my talk I will provide an overview of the threats, offer a way to think about them as well as how best to address them in the short, medium and long term,” she said. “Not only do we need to be taking immediate defensive measures involving technical tools and changes in habits, we also need to be thinking about how the broader technological, commercial, and policy environment for digital communications technologies affects the safety and security of journalists, and what we can all do to influence how our digital environment is designed, managed, and governed.”

The half-day, inaugural Cyber Security event will provide technology and business updates on cybersecurity and anti-piracy initiatives in both film and television, and is being produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA) and the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA), in cooperation with the NAB Show.

The 2018 Cyber Security & Content Protection Summit event will address the unique content protection needs of TV broadcasters, with sessions on protecting major live event broadcasts, the latest broadcast cybersecurity and vendor systems, software and services, protecting journalists in the field, the current state of broadcast signal intrusion, and more. Other topics to be tackled include the auditing of third-party vendors, securing cloud production, turning pirates into paying customers, hardening workflows, and protecting against ransomware.

Microsoft Azure, BTI Studios, Dolby, NAGRA, the Digital Watermarking Alliance and Convergent Risk are sponsoring the event, which is produced by MESA in cooperation with the NAB Show. For more information, visit mesalliance.org/conferences/cdsa-nab-2018, or to register click here.
