Report: Nearly Half Now Own Streaming Devices, Connected TV

Nearly half of consumers now have either a streaming devices, an internet-connect TV or both, with nearly 40% owning the former, including an Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku, according to a new report.

The research comes from interviews with more than 50,000 internet users between the ages of 16-16, by London-based GlobalWebIndex.

Tablet engagement is trending downwards, and wearables continue to be very niche products, with only one in 10 consumers owning one. Still, digital consumers are for the first time most likely to identify mobiles as their most important internet device, with smartphones responsible for more than a third of daily internet time.

“Smartphones have now overtaken PC/laptops as the most commonly owned devices among the online population … now 91% personally own a smartphone,” the report reads. “Fast-growth markets lead the way here (98% in China have a smartphone, for example) but ownership rates are 80%-plus in almost all GWI markets.”

Laptops and PCs still account for a majority of daily online time, while only 2% of responders said they look to their tablets as the most important devices.

Also of note in the report:

• Ad-blocking is becoming a mainstream trend, with four in 10 saying they are blocking ads on their computers.

iOS usage has received a notable boost by the success of the iPhone 6 though there are still more than twice as many Android users.

• Samsung is the most popular mobile brand, with three in 10 owning a Samsung handset.
