Contract Data Gets its Due at ‘Rights and Metadata Madness’ Event

The benefits of metadata when it comes to protecting content against piracy are well known by this point. But often lost in the conversation is something more basic: who owns distribution rights and how can those rights be used?

At the inaugural Rights & Metadata Madness: Where Legal Meets the Digital Supply Chain event July 20 in New York City, a pair of contract rights experts will offer their insights into the opportunities for properly integrating rights contract data into automated systems.

The afternoon keynote “The Culture Shift in Media Business: Why Contract Data is a Key to Opening Media Business Revenue” will have both Elizabeth Scott, CEO of nRapt, and attorney Chey Blake (formerly of A&E Networks) on hand.

“When opportunities arise, and time is of the essence, your ability to turn media assets into media dollars is directly proportionate to how well you can quickly and accurately identify your contractual rights,” Blake said.

She knows what’s she’s talking about too: she’s a business attorney and strategist with more than 20 years experience in intellectual property and media and entertainment law, covering everything from film and TV production and distribution to consumer products and brand merchandising. She founded New York-based Chey Blake Law, PC to specifically tackle entertainment and intellectual property issues. Prior to that, she was corporate counsel at A+E Networks for nearly 15 years.

Blake will be joined on stage by Elizabeth Scott, CEO of performing arts content aggregation and streaming platform nRapt, and a champion of cross-industry content aggregation. Scott has long advised groups on new technology platforms and previously served as chief media and digital officer for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (where she won a 2015 Emmy as head of Lincoln Center’s flagship series, “Live From Lincoln Center”).

Before Lincoln Center, Scott was with Major League Baseball as a senior media executive, running MLB Productions and its broadcast and home entertainment programming verticals. She was an executive producer for Sony Pictures’ “Moneyball.” Before MLB, she practiced IP and entertainment law, after clerking for the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

The 2016 “Rights & Metadata Madness: Where Legal Meets the Digital Supply Chain” event is being sponsored by Rovi, FilmTrack, Fadel and Rightsline and produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA) and Smart Content Council.
