Dolby Marks 50th Atmos Home Entertainment Title

March will mark a milestone for Dolby Atmos, the company’s next-generation, object-based surround sound technology, with the 50th home entertainment title to be enabled with Atmos hitting retail.

March 1 saw the release of a dozen Ultra High-Def (UHD) Blu-ray Disc titles from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Lionsgate, enabled with Atmos, including Mad Max: Fury Road from Warner, which won Oscars for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards presentation Feb. 28.

Also out March 1 on UHD Blu-ray from Lionsgate was Sicario, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Music and Best Sound Editing, as well as Concussion from Sony, the studio’s first non-catalog UHD title with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

On March 8, Warner will release the Dolby Atmos-enabled title In the Heart of the Sea, while on March 22 Lionsgate will release the Atmos title The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. March 15 sees Game of Thrones Season 5 from HBO, also with Dolby Atmos.

Paramount, HBO, Universal, Warner, Lionsgate, BBC and Red Bull Media House have all released or announced standard Blu-rays with Atmos, while Warner has also enabled more than a dozen titles (including Mad Max: Fury Road, Man of Steel, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with Atmos for the Vudu streaming service.
