DTS Headphone:X, Play-Fi Tech Integrated into New Acer Smartphone

By Chris Tribbey

Sound technology company DTS scored another win with its Headphone:X surround sound technology Feb. 22, with mobile phone manufacturer Acer announcing it would include Headphone:X in its new Liquid Jade 2 smartphone. Acer also said the phone will support DTS Play-Fi, the company’s multi-room audio solution.

It marks the first time that a smartphone will include both the DTS headphone surround sound solution and the DTS whole home audio technology…

“As we continue to integrate our innovative audio solutions into a growing number of devices around the world, including Acer’s Liquid Jade 2 smartphone, we are fulfilling our promise to deliver a premium sound experience to as many people as possible on every imaginable platform,” said Jon Kirchner, chairman and CEO of DTS, Inc. “DTS is dedicated to sound, and we will continue to work hard to enhance the music, movie and gaming experience of listeners wherever they are consuming their entertainment.”

An Android-based phone, the Liquid Jade 2 is part of Acer’s flagship line-up of phones, and the addition of DTS Play-Fi technology will allow owners to stream audio from any app or file over WiFi to Play-Fi-enabled speakers and components. DTS Headphone:X has already been adopted by numerous smartphone companies, and offers a 3D sound experience through any pair of headphones or ear buds. The Liquid Jade 2 is expected to hit retail during the second quarter. Acer did not announce a price.

“Acer is pleased to incorporate these DTS technologies into the Liquid Jade 2 so our customers can enjoy the best audio features and options available on a smartphone,” said ST Liew, president of Acer’s smart products business group.

Separately, DTS also announced that the Gionee S8 and Phicomm Passion 25 smartphones will feature DTS sound technology.
