Atkinson to Keynote Content Protection Summit Europe

Richard Atkinson, chairman of the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA) and global director of piracy conversion for Adobe, will be the keynote speaker at this week’s Content Protection Summit: Europe, a first-time collaborative event between the CDSA and the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance: Europe.

The event — supported by media partner Cue Entertainment — will be held Oct. 29 at The Mayfair Hotel in London, and will feature senior-level discussions about the state of content security in the media and entertainment industries

“The security landscape areas of interest have gotten pretty broad and we need to address areas such as cyber and product security, media production and supply chain security as well as security in the cloud,” Atkinson said.

Program sessions include:

• “Understanding the Content Security Landscape,” with Stewart Room, partner and head of cyber security for Pricewaterhouse Coopers Legal discussing the challenges currently facing the content industry.

• “Security Begins with Production,” Chris Johnson, technical Coordinator for EMEA and Americas for CDSA, discussing the steps needed to secure the content supply chain during the production and post-production stages.

• “Multi-Layer Strategy – The Industry Speaks,” featuring a panel of experts discussing the security approaches and technology required to build a robust content security solution. Johnson will moderate a discussion with Mathew Giliat-Smith, CEO of Fortium Technologies, Rob Pinniger, associate director of content security for Virgin Media, Andre Roy, head of security practice for Farncombe Technology and Christopher Schouten, senior director of product marketing for NAGRA.

• “Sweden: Pirate Heaven or Pirate Hell?” with Gerre Versteegh, chairman of Rights Alliance, discussing the state of online piracy in Sweden.

• “Tackling Piracy in Stages,” with Mo Ali, consultant advisor on media piracy for CDSA discussing the importance of preventative programs and security controls and their place in the overall content security landscape.

• “Prosecution is an Essential Part of Prevention,” a panel led by Jim Bottoms, executive director of MESA Europe, will look at the role of legislation and governments in tackling piracy. Bottoms will be joined by Ali, Michael Barley, director for group security for BSkyB and David Würgler, managing director of STOP – Nordic Content Protection.

• “Maintaining Rights and Restricting Access Across Borders,” with Lara Lerville, director of sales and business development for Farncombe Technology, Lorna Brazell, head of the intellectual property for Osborne Clarke and Stephanie Holm, director of operations for Fox International Channel Europe discussing the need to secure content across borders.

• “Meeting the Challenges of Content Redistribution,” a panel discussing the vulnerabilities of sporting and other live events when it comes to content theft. David Millar, director of communications for MESA Europe, Erdem Basegmez, R&D manager for DIGITURK STB & CA, David Leporini, EVP of marketing, products and security for Viaccess-Orca, Andy Nobbs, chief marketing officer for Civolution and David Wachfogel, pay TV security product line manager for Cisco, will discuss.

“While the advent of ever higher broadband penetration and speed facilitates new models for distribution of content to consumers, it also allows for innovative new models for illegal redistribution of pirated content,” said André Roy, head of security practice at Farncombe. “Against this backdrop, and with the arrival of higher value 4K/UHD content, it is becoming increasingly important for content protection solutions to be based not only on robust technology, but also on active management of security through activities such as certification of implementations and ecosystem monitoring.”
