Deluxe’s Company 3, Encore Handle ‘American Gods’ Work

For the new Starz original series “American Gods,” Deluxe Entertainment Services Group’s collection of companies figured in heavily behind the scenes.

The eight, one-hour episodes (produced by FremantleMedia North America) had its extensive visual effects facilitated via The Portal, Deluxe’s cloud-based proprietary service., which helps to simplify the ingest and distribution of original camera plates to VFX vendors.

Deluxe worked with VFX vendors on the project to establish file sizes, formats and color spaces, along with securing IP information for materials, and helped create individual profiles, allowing for shot selections submitted to automatically appear in preferred formats for each vendor.

Additionally, “American Gods” relied on Deluxe’s Company 3 for color grading, Deluxe Toronto for dailies, and Deluxe’s Encore for conform services.

The project was the first TV show to make use of Deluxe’s VFX editorial workflow web service.

“In addition to simplifying workflow, Deluxe’s creative and technical expertise enabled the show to achieve its dark and unique ultra-realistic look,” the company said in a statement. “Company 3 colorist Dave Hussey worked closely with executive producer David Slade and the Company 3 color science team to replicate Slade’s vision, complex color references that were essentially unachievable through traditional methods; developing a custom show node that pushed on dynamic range aspects.”

The series premiered April 30.
