New Xbox Console Focuses on 4K Content

Microsoft June 11 unveiled the latest iteration of its Xbox gaming console, the Xbox One X, a $500 offering that promises seamless 4K quality gaming, a 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc drive, and support for 4K streaming video, HDR for both games and video, and Dolby Atmos audio.

The Xbox One X will hit retail Nov. 7, with Microsoft touting the console having “40% more power than any other console,” capable of delivering “better textures, smoother frame rates and faster load times” for games and video content.

“Xbox empowers game developers large and small to create different types of games for every type of player,” said Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, in a press release. “Not only do we have the biggest cross-platform blockbusters on our platform, we’ve also scoured the world to bring our fans unique content from creative artists that capture the imagination.”

While the new console supports all previously released Xbox One games and peripherals, Microsoft is debuting more than 20 games exclusive to the new console. Additionally, Microsoft announced it will expand Xbox One backwards compatibility support of Xbox 360 console games to more than 400 titles, with several including free software updates.

“Xbox One X was created to deliver uncompromised power, ultimate compatibility and design excellence. It’s both the most powerful and smallest console Xbox has ever built,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft made no mention of potential virtual reality gameplay for the Xbox One X.
