NAB 2017: TiVo Debuts Metadata Packages for Content Owners

TiVo has long been a go-to for the metadata needs of service providers, CE manufacturers and distributors. But more and more the company is recognizing that content owners need tailored metadata solutions as well.

At this month’s NAB Show, TiVo will debut Studio, Broadcast and Network Metadata Packages for the content side, incorporating themes, keywords, images and related programs, allowing studios, broadcasters and networks to better use their catalogs of content.

“A lot of what we’ve done in the past has really been around metadata optimization, packaging and enhancements for the service provider, CE manufacturers and distributors,” a TiVo spokesman said. “But what we’re finding is strong demand on the content side, where the owners themselves are needing more and better metadata solutions.

“We’re making these metadata solutions available to the content owners themselves. The content owners are recognizing and seeing the formats that need to be supported multiplying.”

To help better personalize content, the new metadata solutions include a host of TiVo offerings, including:

• TiVo’s Knowledge Graph Engine, which generates dynamic, regionalized metadata, providing discovery systems with “a deeper understanding of entertainment content, how it relates to each other and most importantly, the strength of those connections.” Knowledge Graph Engine enables contextually-relevant discovery experiences by assessing what’s happening in specific parts of the world, and relating that to entertainment content, in a bid to anticipate what viewers want next.

• Enhanced connections, which is TiVo’s unique machine learning technology that identifies relevant connections between content along with the strength of the relationship. An example would be articles on a content producer’s web properties that can be mapped to informative profile pages.

• Trending content, with TiVo assessing the popularity and relevance of content, enabling discovery systems to anticipate consumers’ interests. Recommendations are made aware of popularity, giving a fair amount of familiar recommendations along with novel recommendations that help enable discovery.

• Keyword relevancy, which is an expanded set of descriptive metadata that creates new ways to discover content.

• And deep, real-time, regionalized metadata that can be seamlessly distributed to various platforms, enabling new ways to discover content.

“Studios, broadcasters and networks make large investments to bring the most compelling content to their viewers, but they frequently have large untapped back catalogs that are not being maximized against an increasing number of fragmented distribution opportunities,” said Roz Ho, SVP and GM of metadata for TiVo. “By analyzing these catalogs, TiVo can build stronger connections and deliver enhanced metadata that will better optimize the content for greater discoverability.”
