From Creation Through Delivery Deluxe Helps Bring ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ to Audiences Worldwide (MESA)

With more than $1 billion in worldwide box office, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm, is an undeniable global success; delighting audiences across 60 regions in its opening weekend. Deluxe is pleased to have played a role in enabling this worldwide entertainment phenomenon from creation through delivery – posting and mastering for all deliverable formats including dimensionalizing it for stereoscopic 3D. For delivery, Deluxe handled localizing, mastering, and distributing the movie throughout the world.

Deluxe CEO John Wallace said, “There is no bigger film franchise in the world than Star Wars, and we are proud to have been invited to help realize the vision of the filmmakers and get Rogue One delivered worldwide for all audiences; it is a tremendous accomplishment.”

Color Grading
Deluxe’s EFILM was involved in Rogue One, directed by Gareth Edwards and shot by cinematographer Greig Fraser, from the start of production, with Deluxe colorist Shane Harris collaborating with Fraser and Edwards on the overall looks for major sequences. Colorist Mitch Paulson performed the final color grading in sessions that involved multiple interpretations of the color decisions to maximize displays and viewing environments for traditional D-cinema 2D as well as 2D- and 3D-EDR (Disney’s Extended Dynamic Range format), which delivers the 3D experience without the loss of brightness and dynamic range that generally comes with 3D projection. EFILM’s trailer department also completed multiple marketing versions on the Rogue One campaign.

Stereo Conversion
Deluxe’s StereoD worked in conjunction with the filmmakers, Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and The Walt Disney Studios to build the 3D stereoscopic imagery from the original 2D imagery. This was a return to the franchise for Stereo D, which also built the stereoscopic version of last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has been tapped for the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi releasing in 2017. John Knoll, Chief Creative Officer and Visual Effects Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic said, “We knew from experience that the team at Stereo D could deliver an exciting and engaging 3D experience but their work on Rogue One showed that they were equally adept at performing a conversion with a subtle, artful touch that would help bring the story to life.”

Localization
To support global releases, Deluxe Localization with Sfera created the subtitling in 35 languages and worked closely with Disney’s audio replacement teams during the international dubbing process for this highly sensitive project. Deluxe also delivered Audio Description and other specialized delivery services, including compliance editing for particular territories.

Digital Cinema
Deluxe Technicolor Digital Cinema created and distributed more than 300 distinct digital cinema masters for 70+ countries. For the worldwide opening, the team created more than 400,000 individual playback KDMs, Deluxe’s proprietary digital key system that allows the encrypted media to play through a theater’s projector. The company also created the additional KDMs for theaters in China, for the movie’s January opening.

DVD
Deluxe created DVD screeners for U.S. military bases and Academy screeners for members, and DVD and Blu-ray discs covering more than 40 languages for worldwide release in 2017. The company also localized Blu-ray and DVD menu graphics in more than 20 languages for home entertainment versions.
