Amazon Debuts New Fire TV Stick

Amazon Sept. 28 unveiled the latest version of its Fire TV Stick, a $40 streaming device that includes an Alexa Voice Remote and access to more than 7,000 channels and apps. Amazon said the new version runs 30% faster than the original.

The Alexa Voice Remote gives owners the ability to voice-search apps and content across 90 apps and channels, and the device streams 1080p video. Amazon is also giving those who purchase the device by Oct. 31 a free month of Sling TV, two months of Hulu for free, and $10 credit for Amazon Video.

The Fire TV Stick begins shipping Oct. 20.

“We are proud that our customers have made Amazon Fire TV the No. 1 streaming media player in the U.S.,” said Marc Whitten, VP of Amazon Fire TV, in a statement. “Today, we are excited to make it even better. The new Amazon Fire TV Stick has been completely redesigned with incredible performance, powerful voice search and the included Alexa-powered remote to deliver instant access to a vast selection of movies, TV shows, games and Alexa skills … .”

The announcement comes just two days after Roku made waves by announcing its latest round of streaming media devices, including a $30 Roku Express streaming media stick, and a high-end Roku Ultra ($130) that handles 4K streaming up to 60fps and support for high dynamic range (HDR) video.
