Inaugural Rights & Metadata Madness Event To Tackle Rights Management, Contracts

At the inaugural “Rights & Metadata Madness: Where Legal Meets the Digital Supply Chain” event July 20 in New York City, the current state of media and entertainment content rights will be one of the lead topics, with a series of legal and digital supply chain experts sharing the latest in rights management, metadata and reviews and approvals.

“By embedding data into their rights and contracts workflows broadcasters will are now able to reach out to more consumers, on more platforms and devices, to generate greater revenues,” said Christy King, conference chair of the event. “Content owners require real-time access to rights information and availability on the basis of geography, language and interest of its targeted consumer groups.”

Here’s a look at what attendees at the Microsoft Technology Center can expect:

• The event opens with a keynote — “Rights Information in a DAM: Here is How We Did It” — by Greg Cram, associate director of copyright and information policy for the New York Public Library, who’ll share how the library developed its rights metadata management system.

• In the panel “The FYI and ROI on Rights Management Systems” Jacki Guerra, VP of global systems for the National Geographic Channel, and Rick Hunt, senior director of media platforms for PBS, will look at the ways different media companies have started to address rights management tracking.

• Bill Rosenblatt, head of digital content technology for GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies, will share an overview of the state of rights and contract standards in music, publishing and news.

• In the presentation “Getting Ahead of Review and Approval,” Marcos Bueno, head of production and media operations at Vox Studios, will look at whether it’s possible to automate rights contract information, or if it’s always going to need a human touch.

• The afternoon keynote — “The Culture Shift in Media Business: Why Contract Data is a Key to Opening Media Business Revenue — has Elizabeth Scott, CEO of nRapt, and attorney Chey Blake (formerly of A&E Networks) tackling the opportunities in putting rights contract data into automated systems.

• In the panel “Contract Language: 50 Shades of Grey” Felix Cisneros, managing principal of Olive Bridge Media and Carin Forman, director of digital photo services for HBO, will share their thoughts on how legal hurdles can stand in the way of effective data measurement and reporting.

• In “Rights Metadata: The Devil is in the Details” Padraic Boyle, director of enterprise media for Major League Baseball Advanced Media and Sarah Nix, director of global data governance for Viacom, will look at how M&E companies are creating governance systems for their content, and connecting disparate databases.
