MarkLogic’s Turner: ‘Suitcase’ Project was ‘Hugely Ambitious’

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — The film “The Suitcase” is less than a half hour long, but the amount of work that went into it was more indicative of a full season of a TV show. That’s because those who produced it — the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California (ETC@USC), with the help of MarkLogic and Disney — did things that hadn’t been done before.

“It was hugely ambitious, had huge scope,” said Matt Turner, CTO of media and entertainment for MarkLogic, speaking May 25 at the Hollywood IT Society’s (HITS) “Holly-wired: Where IT and Entertainment Meet” event in Los Angeles.

While making the film, at every step in the process, the team behind it included production focuses on cloud security, metadata, storage, and the use of common frameworks. The effort illustrated the cloud principles of the C4 (Cinema Content Creation Cloud) process, which links assets during production, and shows how production data can be integrated into a film.

“The trend we see is toward more networking,” Turner added. “You’re doing more with a project where more and more people need access.”

Erik Weaver, project lead for production in the cloud for ETC@USC, said the project resulted in everyone involved learning new ways to work with cloud technologies and network-based workflows centered around metadata. And it won’t be the last time his group does something like this.

“We learned so much, and [we’ll produce] another short like it down the line,” he said.
