BTI Studios Discovers Asia’s Voices of Tomorrow at Comic World (MESA)

At this year’s Comic World Hong Kong convention, BTI Studios Asia held the first in a series of dubbing competitions in a bid to meet client demand for new voice talents across Asia. Over 100 male and female entrants aged from 15-50 applied for the chance to be a voice talent of the future. A total of 15 finalists were selected. The finalists were all shown a clip from the Japanese anime — Concrete Revolutio and given one hour to prepare to act one of the voices. The language of the voice actors was Cantonese.

The voice actors needed to show how skilled they were at fitting the new dialogue, lip-synced, into the same timeframe as the original. That was hard enough — but they also had a tough panel to impress. Two of the judges were trusted voice talents used by BTI Studios in Hong Kong. They were joined by Meeling Wong, BTI Asia’s Dubbing Manager, and KC Sek, Director of BTI Asia. The judges marked each performer on emotion, tone of voice, timing and acting.

The winner was given a place on BTI Asia’s dubbing course, which trains its attendees to become professional voice actors. The runner-up received a 50% discount on the course, which will take place in BTI’s Hong Kong studios starting this month.

BTI Asia will be holding more competitions like these in other Asian territories and will continue to host dubbing courses throughout the year in order to source and train top dubbing talents across the Asian languages.

KC Sek, Director of BTI Asia, said: “Sourcing top voice talent to serve one of the biggest dubbing markets on earth is no easy task. These competitions and courses are together a valuable way to uncover more of the quality voice performers that help to make BTI Studios a trusted partner in dubbing across Asia.”
